What does URIBL check for a domain?
URIBL maintains DNS-based lists of domains seen in spam and unwanted content, queried the same way as SURBL and Spamhaus's DBL but built from its own independent data.
Why run both SURBL and URIBL if they check similar things?
Different blocklist operators observe different spam/abuse feeds and can disagree on any given domain -- checking more than one independent list reduces reliance on a single operator's blind spots.
What does a listing mean here?
URIBL has associated the domain with spam or unwanted content in its own data; a live DNS query is run each time, so this reflects current status, not a historical record.
Why can this check return UNKNOWN?
A DNS resolution failure or a non-NXDOMAIN query error is reported as UNKNOWN rather than a false PASS.
